Hillcrest Avenue is a collector street in the neighbourhood of Cooksville. The eastern third of the street has been part of Cooksville's street grid for about a century, while the rest was constructed as part of the Cooksville Brickyard redevelopment in the late 1990s. Its entire length is designated as a cycling route.

The easternmost portion, between Hurontario Street and Confederation Parkway, goes through undeveloped land between Cooksville GO Station and Thomas L. Kennedy Secondary School. West of Confederation to the former Brickyard boundary, it goes through various small residential subdivisions of different densities dating from the 1950s to the 2000s. From there to Elmcreek Road, it faces detached and semi-detached houses on the north side, and townhouses, Brickyard Park, and Father Daniel Zanon Elementary School on the south. The remaining stretch to Mavis Road has light industrial to the north and big box retail to the south.
