Responses to Wikisauga Election Questions

1. What will you do for Mississauga? I will continue to fight for my constituents by investing in infrastructure, improving health care, reducing child poverty, securing more affordable housing, increasing support for seniors and helping small and medium sized businesses.

2. How will you support improving healthcare in Mississauga?

The Liberal Party has proposed a $420 million Doctors and Nurses Fund to ensure that all Canadians have access to a medical professional. The Doctors and Nurses Fund will contribute to proposals from provinces, along with universities, that will:

  • increase the capacity to train and graduate doctors, nurses and medical technicians;
  • remove bottlenecks that currently slow the process of licensing new health care professionals;
  • reward medical students choosing needed specialties such as family medicine, rural medicine, and geriatrics; and
  • provide financial support to assist foreign-trained doctors and other health professionals in obtaining their Canadian qualifications more quickly.

This announcement builds on our commitment to create a new Catastrophic Drug plan to ensure Canadians can access the drug therapies they need without facing financial hardship. Together, these two initiatives represent $1.3 billion in investments to strengthen the health care system enjoyed by Canadians.

3. As our local econonmy is changing what are your ideas on bringing more jobs to Mississauga?

Our local economy is facing many of the same challenges felt across Canada and around the world. Many of the high-paying manufacturing jobs we used to rely on are vanishing and being exported overseas. We need to move up the value-chain and encourage innovation. The Liberal Party has therefore proposed a $1 billion Advanced Manufacturing Prosperity fund that will invest in manufacturing and R&D facilities that would create new jobs. We are also proposing significant corporate and personal income tax cuts to further stimulate the economy.

4. If elected how will you work to protect our environment?

The Liberal Party has a plan for a greener Canada that puts a price on pollution and shifts the tax burden from Canadians to polluters. This plan includes significant income tax cuts, increases in benefits for families and seniors, investments in green technologies, public transit, green mortgages to provide incentives to retrofit homes and similar intiatives. It takes action now to transition our economy into one where it pays to reduce green house gases and encourages high-paying green jobs in the process. For more information visit www.thegreenshift.ca

5. How will you work to improve the existing infrastructure in Mississauga?

Infrastructure has always been one of my major priorites and an important one for the riding given its position as a manufacturing and logistical hub. The Liberal Party is proposing a $70-billion investment over 10 years that will support Liberal priorities, including:

  • at least $10 billion for strategic infrastructure, particularly green infrastructure such as clean water, sewage treatment, and clean energy grids;
  • at least $8 billion for a National Transit Strategy that will enable our cities to expand their transit systems and green their transit fleets;
  • at least $3 billion for a dedicated Small Communities Fund, to ensure that all Canadians are able to see strengthened, more resilient infrastructure;
  • at least $4.5 billion for our country's gateways, corridors and borders to ensure that Canada's infrastructure facilitates, rather than hinders, our trade and tourism industries while keeping Canada safe and secure; and
  • at least $3 billion for sports and recreational facilities because an active society is a healthy society and Canada must renew and expand its arenas and other leisure facilities.
