Mahackamo, as depicted in Purchase of Norwalk

Mahackemo (also Mahackamo, and Mamechimans) is the name of the sachem (chief) of the Norwalke Indians. He was the person who negotiated the conditions of the Patrick Deed for the Indians in 1640. Although the modern custom is to pronounce the name "Ma-hack-emo," it was originally "Ma-ha-keem" or "Ma-ma-keem." Chimmons Island is named after him. 1
