Plaid Friday is a "shop local" alternative to Black Friday sales at big box stores that have become so prevalent in recent years.

The idea for Plaid Friday began in Oakland in 2009, and has spread across the country. Some businesses offer special discounts for customers wearing plaid.

Not only does shopping locally support local businesses, but more of the money spent locally stays local—one study showed 73¢ vs. 43¢ of each dollar.
