Councilor Gaylord grew up in Raleigh and is a life-long resident of District E. After graduating from Broughton High School, and receiving his undergraduate and MBA degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill, he returned to Raleigh to live and raise a family.

He currently lives with his wife, Ashley Barber Gaylord, their daughter, Gigi, and their twin sons, Mont and Demitri in the Ramblewood neighborhood.

He is the General Manager of North Hills, and having grown up in Raleigh, Gaylord understands - and appreciates - the need to build and maintain vibrant, safe and healthy neighborhoods in District E and throughout our city. Gaylord was named one of the Triangle Business Journal's “Forty Under Forty” in 2009, one of the News and Observer's “10 to Watch in 2010”, and 2011's "Outstanding Public Servant" by the North Carolina Center for Voter Education. At the national level, he was recently asked to serve on the National Technology Adoption Advisory Council.

On City Council, Gaylord serves as a member of the Comprehensive Planning Committee, Public Works Committee and Council Liaison to eight boards and commissions (Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission, Capital Area Preservation, Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau, Wake County Keep America Beautiful, Raleigh Little Theatre, Raleigh Youth Council, Wake County Growth Management Task Force, and the Parks, Recreation and Greenway Advisory Board).

At Work

Councilor Gaylord is the General Manager of North Hills, where he has overseen and directed much of its expansion---creating jobs for our citizens and increasing Raleigh's tax base.

In 2004, Gaylord began working for Kane Realty as a consultant for its urban infill condominium properties and officially joined the team in 2005 as director of residential development at North Hills. In that role, he was responsible for assessing project feasibility, coordinating design, financing, construction, and overseeing sales and marketing efforts. 

Gaylord later earned full responsibility for Kane’s residential real estate business. He led teams of development associates and construction managers to develop and construct town homes, condominiums and single-family homes and led a design team in planning apartment homes as part of the North Hills expansion. He established site plans with local and national land planning firms to maximize the community’s social, economic and environmental benefit. 

As a result of his leadership with Kane, Gaylord was named General Manager and currently oversees the day-to-day operations for all of North Hills where he directs members of Kane’s retail, residential and commercial teams.

A Focus on Sustainability

Councilor Gaylord is a member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) where he is involved as an Emerging Green Builder. He has achieved certification as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professional. He is passionate about sustainable development and transfers that knowledge to his work at North Hills and in his service as a member of the Raleigh City Council.

With his LEED certification, Gaylord provided input on the development of the CAPTRUST Tower at North Hills, which received LEED Gold Certification for its sustainable design and use of green building principles.

Under his leadership, North Hills has implemented solar roofs, solar hot water heaters, electric public transportation, WiFi access throughout the property, recycling, and energy saving programs.

As a result of his efforts in sustainable development, North Hills was recently won the Regional Award for City of Raleigh's 2010 Environmental Awards. North Hills was also recently named a finalist for the Best in American Living Award in the Smart Growth Community category. This award is sponsored by the National Home Builder’s Association Design Committee and Professional Builder magazine. In 2008, North Hills was recognized by the Triangle Business Journal (TBJ) for a TBJ Green Award in the category of Green Land Development.

In the Community

Councilor Gaylord’s community involvement is as deep as his love of Raleigh. He served as a member of the Raleigh Planning Commission and earned a reputation as a thoughtful, insightful leader as the commission dealt with tough planning, growth management and development issues including the overhaul of Raleigh's Comprehensive Plan which will guide the city's growth for the next 20 years.

Beyond his service on the City Council (including its Comprehensive Planning and Public Works Committees), Gaylord’s passion for a better Raleigh drives his involvement in a wide variety of civic and business organizations including:
