Immediate Emergency (Life-Threatening)

CALL 911. For users of a TTY or TDD phone, dial 9-1-1 and press the space bar until someone answers.

Note: It is generally the best idea to call from a landline rather than a cell phone, if you can. When you use a cell phone, the service company transfers your call to the emergency service provider that is closest to the cell phone reception tower, rather than what may be the nearest emergency service provider to the emergency itself. This is especially relevant when on the UCSC campus— calling from a land line will ensure that you will be connected with the university emergency dispatch rather than the city dispatch or the highway patrol, since your call can be traced via phone lines. Pay phones always allow free 9-1-1 calls.

Residents with VoIP phone service should know how their provider operates Enhanced 911 service (e911), which allows for VoIP lines to connect to the public emergency network (Public Safety Access Point).  For consumer information read the FCC guide [WWW]http://transition.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/voip911.pdf.
