The downtown Santa Cruz location at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Cathcart Street closed when the company completed construction of their new 92,000 square feet store at the Capitola Mall. Macy's purchased the Capitola Mall location from J.C. Penney at the end of 2001, and after some remodeling, opened up shop in May 2002. The downtown Santa Cruz building was severely damaged in the 1989 earthquake and was eventually demolished. The University Town Center now occupies that location.
The J.C. Penney Auto Center was located in the area currently occupied by the Santa Cruz Metro Center.
Currently, the closest J.C. Penney locations is in San Jose, Salinas, and on the internet.
