The McPherson Center is a mixed use retail/office complex downtown. Half of the structure comprises the Museum of Art and History. The offices half of the structure was once the county jail. A metal framed penthouse office floor was added to the roof of the original concrete building (which was used as an exercise yard) to create a fourth floor.
The McPherson Center was built by Bogard Construction, Inc. and designed by William Turnbull & Associates.
The area that the McPherson center is built on is a former section of the San Lorenzo River bed, and the building was built with a 35 inch thick floating slab which was designed to withstand the type of soil loss that may occur in an event similar to the Loma Prieta Earthquake.1
