History

Spanish settlers came to Monterey, California in 1770. Monterey became a state capital when California became part of the United States. The city has a "Path of History." This is a series of markers and signs noting historic buildings. (On the web at http://www.mtycounty.com/pgs-path/apath.html)

The San Carlos Cathedral is the oldest building in the city. It was built in 1794.

Businesses

Monterey Harbor at night. Cannery Row in Monterey: August, 2005. Monterey was once famous for sardines, especially after the 1945 novel "Cannery Row." Monterey renamed Ocean View Avenue to "Cannery Row" in 1958. The canneries are gone. The cannery buildings have become shops for the tourist industry. While overfishing was part of the reason for the decline of the sardine industry, it has been discovered that sardines —a term used for several fish in the herring family— have a boom and bust cycle every 40 years. Monterey still has a fishing industry.

Tourism is important to the city of Monterey, and is considered a major industry.

Transportation

Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) has about 24 routes in Monterey. A maximum of 3 children, 46" tall and under may ride free with a paying passenger. (MST Link)

Amtrak has a train station at Tyler at Del Monte in Monterey. Tickets cannot be purchased at the Monterey station nor can luggage be checked in at the Monterey station. The nearest station for that is in Salinas, California. You can also buy Amtrak tickets over the phone (1-800-872-7245) or online (http://amtrak.com).

Monterey Peninsula Airport is at 200 Fred Kane Drive #200, and has about 40 flights a day. Phone:(831) 648-7000.
