Joseph Lawrence Alioto (1916–1998) American politician and lawyer. He served as the 36th Mayor of San Francisco, California, from 1968 to 1976. In 1955, he served as the first Chairman of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency.

Alioto put his energy behind the development of three major building projects: the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system; the Transamerica Pyramid; and the Embarcadero Center. Events that occurred during his tenure as mayor included strife in the Haight-Ashbury with the drug culture, anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, the start of the LBGT gay Castro District, the Black Panther marches, the Zebra murders, and the Zodiac killings.
