Randwick City Council is funding $50,000 for the refurbishment of a 30-year-old mural "Proud of our Elders" on Belmore Road, Randwick. Carol Ruff, one of the original artists who painted the mural in 1981, is to come back and recreate it. The mural is an iconic mark of the Randwick shopping area and pays acknowledgment to the Indigenous and immigrant communities that have helped form the character of Randwick City. It celebrates a lot of elders of Randwick district such as: Ollie Simms the oldest Aboriginal Elder in La Perouse and Auntie to generations of children; Doris Hyde taught hundreds of children to swim and was Gold Medal winner of the Masters Older Age group Olympics; and Harry Reed ex-jockey and helped build the University of NSW.
