Pomegranate Trees are trees in the genus Punica of the Loosestrife family. The Loosestrife family also contains Crape Myrtles, Loosestrife, Redstem, and Toothcups.
There are only two species in the genus Punica, and only one is likely to be seen in Woodland.
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a thorny, deciduous tree from the Mediterranean region. It usually grows about 15 to 35 feet tall and has a lifespan of up to 200 years. It has two types of flowers on the same tree: male flowers and "perfect" flowers (containing both male and female parts in the same flower). Pomegranate trees are ranked 2 out of 10 on the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale, indicating that they are very unlikely to cause hay fever. Pomegranate trees are planted in Pioneer Park and as a street tree on Clover Street.
