The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) is the public transit company providing fixed-route, Connector and Community Transit services throughout the tri-county area in suburban Detroit.  The agency was formed in 1967 as the Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority (SEMTA), following guidelines set by Public Act 204 enacted that year which replaced Downriver's two largest transit providers, Great Lakes Transit and Metropolitan Transit. It received the current SMART name in 1989.

SMART currently has a fleet of over 230 fixed-route buses which serve dozens of routes, including many in the Downriver area listed below.

The Detroit Department of Transportation does have a couple routes within the borders of Downriver.
