The Bear River is a tributary of the Feather River that flows south of Wheatland and Plumas Lake and north of Rio Oso. The river originates in Tahoe National Forest south of the Yuba River south fork and north of the American River north fork, southwest of Lake Spaulding. It travels southwest and is impounded at Rollins Reservoir, Lake Combie, and Camp Far West Lake before flowing into the Feather River between Rio Oso and Nicolaus.

The Bear River above Camp Far West Lake serves as the border between Nevada County and Placer County. Below Camp Far West Lake, portions of it serve as the border between Yuba and Placer Counties and between Yuba and Sutter Counties.

Recreation

For over 25 years, the Bear River Tubers have braved the river’s rapids and the parties and lived to tell about it.

The Bear River Directory lists local websites on river recreation and river conservation (sort alphabetically, 1=kayaking-canoeing, 2=rafting, 3=conservation, 4=fishing, 5=hiking-camping, 6=local information).
