The native plant community of Woodleaf is yellow pine forest.
The U.S. Postal Service sometimes lists addresses in Woodleaf as being in Challenge, because they are both in the 95925 zip code. However, on the Yuba-Sutter Wiki, we prefer listing the more specific location Woodleaf.
History
Woodleaf was formerly known as Woodville and took its name from James Wood. The History of Yuba County, California (Chapter XXXII: North East Township) by Thompson & West, 1879, described Woodville this way:
| Charles Barker settled on the Butte county line in June, 1850. A month later, I. E. Brown bought him out. The place had become known as the Barker stand, and when I. E. Brown built a hotel here he called it the Barker House. In June, 1851, he sold it to Hill & Jumper. It afterwards became the property of James Wood, who in 1858, erected a large brick hotel, and changed the name to Woodville House. The brick for this building was made on the place. Mr. Wood kept a store and bar in connection with the hotel. |
A post office was established in Woodleaf from 1898 to 1945 and again from 1947 to 1971.1 The Woodville House is now a church youth camp called Woodleaf Towne Young Life Camp.2
