Rebuilt the Hagen Arms ‘Adamson is now a great man in Echunga … Both Adamson and Catchlove are building good two-storeyed houses. Whether they will be really good inns I cannot say and at present neither place stands very high as an inn. They are public nuisances … John Adamson has stretched his arm too far. He has built a good house and got into it, but such has been the expense, that some imagine it will ruin him, but I have great faith in nobblers. Catchlove’s house too is much improved and looks neat, though less expensive than Adamson’s. He is now getting a fair share of the business … J Adamson has formed an arrangement with his creditors … Adamson has left the colony bankrupt.’ George Sanders letterbook to Jacob Hagen 1856-1860 J Whimpress Echunga 1839-1939 pp21-25
