1868-1878 Lord Exmouth Hotel Exeter

Apparently a bachelor. He left all his estate to his mother, Mrs Thomas Davies nee Elizabeth perhaps Garbutt?, who left her possessions to her daughter Mrs William Wooldridge nee Mary Davies.

Son of Elizabeth Davies (//c1810-//12/10/1887 Died Peterhead SA (of Staplehurst). She was the widow of Thomas Davies (//?-9/10/1860) Died Lefevre Peninsula SA. who had been a waterman, mariner of Le Fevre Peninsula. Apparently laid out Davies Town, now part of Exeter. He was a controversial figure – see Manning Place Names of SA p123. Thomas and Elizabeth Davies were also the parents of Mrs William Wooldridge nee Mary Davies.

Thomas Davies purchased Block 39 Pt Section 1107 from Ephraim Teakle on 1/12/1853 and immediately mortgaged the property to Teakle and laid out Davies Town. Davies repaid that mortgage and remortgaged again and then sold the sub-division outright to Teakle, shortly before Davies died in 1860.

Thomas Davies’ son, William Garbut Davies, leased Allotments 1 & 2 in the adjacent sub-division of Waterville, which Ephraim Teakle had laid out. Teakle sold these allotments to Francis Reynolds, who apparently built the Lord Exmouth Hotel. WG Davies had a 10-year lease from 16/8/1869, with right of purchase at any time during that period. Reynolds became a bankrupt and WG Davies bought the hotel from his estate 15/8/1877. Application 27437
