The homily delivered by Rev. Melissa Anne Rogers told the story of Gladys Muehlig's life. She depicted it as mostly positive, mentioning the positive influence that her husband Bob had on the community as a funeral director, her love of travel and Michigan football, as well as how her family have stayed close. However, she also mentioned the rift that occurred at Zion Lutheran Church, where both Bob's and Gladys's families had been members for a very long time, which caused her to leave that church in the mid-1990s.

Obituary

Age 88, died at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor on June 13, 2010. A lifelong resident of Ann Arbor, she was born on July 22, 1921, and was the only child of Frederick H. and Emma I. (nee Gerstler) Podewil. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Robert E. Muehlig. ("Bob") Muehlig (1920-1996), the former president and co-owner of Muehlig Funeral Chapel. She is survived by her children Carol Muehlig and Gary Muehlig both of Ann Arbor, and Linda Muehlig of Northampton, Massachusetts. She is also survived by a niece, Kathleen (Muehlig) Cramer, and her husband, Don, of Ypsilanti. After graduating from Ann Arbor High School. Gladys worked as a stenographer at the county court house. She became a fulltime homemaker following her marriage in 1946. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, where she was a member and participated for many years in the sanctuary choir and bell choir. In 1997 she became a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she also sang alto in the choir and played bells. She enjoyed traveling in this country and abroad. She especially enjoyed trips to Chicago and going every summer to the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario, and the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. She was a Michigan football and marching band fan and traveled to many away games and bowl games with her family. She loved evening "Supper Club" at Metzger's, Knight's and other local restaurants. She was greatly beloved by her children and was a wonderful mother and companion. She will be missed every day by her family and friends. Visitation will be at Muehlig Funeral Chapel on Thursday, June 17, 2010 from 5-7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1423 Washtenaw Ave, at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 18, 2010, followed by a reception then to Forest Hill Cemetery for burial. Charitable donations in Gladys Muehlig's memory may be made to the Handbell Memorial Fund of First Presbyterian Church, the University of Michigan Marching Band, or Arbor Hospice.
