Camarillo is a community undergoing rapid changes both in terms of residents and infrastructure. Major changes began with the development of the Camarillo Premium Outlets, leading to an influx of tourists and shoppers from around the world. Once a sleepy bedroom community for the greater Los Angeles area and the business districts of Ventura County, the city of about 65,000 residents is quickly morphing into its new roll as a college town with the opening of California State University Channel Islands. The city has embarked on a plan to improve the general appearance, updating Las Posas Road, Ventura Boulevard, and several Freeway Overpasses. Historically, and recently as well, much of the expansion and development of the town has been at the expense of Local Agriculture, an unfortunate reality since the town's roots are entirely agricultural. Situated on the Oxnard Plain, this fertile region produces much of the country's Strawberries. Camarillo has its own set of Lingo specific to the area.
