Abbie Mary Gowett Dewey was the wife of William Dewey, brother of Thomas Dewey and a nephew of Admiral George Dewey. He was briefly the proprietor of the Dewey House, called "a popular summer resort" in Saranac Lake in May of 1898. When he died, his widow operated the hotel, using the name A. M. Dewey. The hotel was later called the Empire Hotel.
