Born: c. 1864

Died: February 1900

Married: Abbie Mary Gowett, known as A. M. Dewey

William Dewey, brother of Thomas Dewey and nephew of Admiral George Dewey, in May of 1896 was the proprietor of the Dewey House, a popular summer resort in Saranac Lake, according to an article in the Plattsburgh Daily Press.

A question has arisen about the name of Dewey Mountain. William and Thomas Dewey were businessmen in Saranac Lake for a rather brief period, but since they were--as the Plattsburgh paper states--the nephews of Admiral George Dewey, perhaps the name of the mountain honors their uncle, who was considered the most admired man in America after his success in Manila Bay in the spring of 1898.

Plattsburgh Daily Press, May 13, 1898

Mr William Dewey and Mr. Stephen Merchant from the new Dewey House, with Elmer Dockum and Albert Gronk as guides, visited the same water (Lake Clear) this week and succeeded in capturing two lakers weighing about five pounds each,  besides numerous speckled trout from one-half pound to two pounds in weight.

William Dewey, a popular hotel keeper at Saranac Lake and proprietor of the Dewey House, died last week. For many years he had been associated with different hotels in the Adirondacks and had wide acquaintance in that section. He was a man of congenial spirit and will be missed by many outside his immediate family circle. He was only 36 years of age. Besides his wife, Mr. Dewey is survived by four brothers, Cornelius, of Bloomingdale; Dennis, of Franklin Falls; Martin, of Butte City, Montana, and Thomas, of Saranac Lake. Three sisters also mourn him, Mary Ann Finnegan, Katherine Finnegan, and Margaret Seeley, all of Saranac Lake.
