Charles Kirche, Jr. was a professor of mathematics at Paul Smith's College beginning with its first class in 1946 until his retirement in 1982. One of his students was Steve Ross. As a boy, Charles Jr. remembered talking with Phelps Smith while waiting for the school bus. He was also caretaker at Pine Tree Point, a camp on Upper St. Regis Lake, taking over from Charles Sr. who had been caretaker there since 1911. He and his wife are buried in St. John's Cemetery in Paul Smiths.

Charles D. Kirche Jr.

Charles D. Kirche Jr., 85, of Paul Smiths, died Monday, March 11, 2002 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born on Sept. 18, 1916 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Charles and Janet (Moyer) Kirche.

Mr. Kirche had been a resident of Paul Smiths for most of his life and had worked as a professor of mathematics at Paul Smith's College from 1946 until his retirement in 1982. He graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1934 and later attended and graduated with a master's degree from St. Lawrence University in 1939.

He is survived by his wife Catherine (Pritchard), whom he married in Paul Smiths in 1939; one daughter M. Ellen Jones of Arlington, Va. and one son Donald Kirche of Saranac Lake.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Murial Scanlon and Florence Kirche.

Funeral arrangements are in care of' the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. Interment services will take place at the convenience of the family at St. John's Cemetery in Paul Smiths.
