Collier Whittemore Baird was a business man and philanthropist.  He moved to Saranac Lake in 1951.  He was active with the Boy Scouts.

Collier Baird dies at home

SARANAC LAKE - Collier W. Baird, 88, of Glenwood Road died yesterday morning at his home.

He was born in East Orange, N.J. on Oct. 3, 1888, a son of William Torrey and Annie Grant Baird.

He was educated at Newark Academy in Newark, N.J. and graduated in 1910 from Yale University's Sheffield Scientific School.

He joined the Baird Rubber and Trading Co. shortly after graduation and was one of its principals until his retirement in 1945.

He was active in the New Jersey Cavalry Troop A and served on the Mexican border.

With his late wife, Dorothy Norton Baird, of the Oranges he moved from South Orange to Basking Ridge, N.J. and started Two Brooks Farm, a Guernsey breeding farm. He was an active member of the New Jersey Guernsey Breeders Association and the American Guernsey Cattle Association.

In 1951 he and Mrs. Baird moved to Saranac Lake where he was an active member of Rotary, St. Luke's Church, the Boy Scouts, and many other civic endeavors.

Those who knew Mr. Baird, knew him to be an unpretentious man whose quietly philanthropic ways have helped many without casting the spotlight on himself.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Cuprak Baird; one brother, William Torrey of South Orange; three sons; Collier W. Jr. of Far Hills, N.J., John T. of Glastonbury, Conn., William N. of Grand Junction, Colo; three daughters Mrs. William P. Person of Dover, Mass., Dr. Dorothy Leib, of New London, Conn.; Miss Louise Baird of Vineland, N.J.; 14 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

There will be no calling hours.. A private family service will be held at the Fortune Funeral Home, and a public funeral Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Church with the Rev. Philip Snyder, rector, officiating.

Cremation will follow in Troy.

The family requests that those wishing to remember Mr. Baird donate to a memorial fund at the Saranac Lake General Hospital.
