Dr. Y’s introduces Mr. Quigley to Saranac Lake

Downtown's newest cocktail lounge, "Mr. Quigley's", welcomes the new decade by celebrating the past.

During the late 1920's and early 30's, Larry Quigley ran an eating establishment called “Larry’s Lunch" in the building next to the Saranac River, now the home of Dr. Y's tavern. With his location in the heart of downtown, Larry Quigley enjoyed a brisk business at a time many remember as this village's heyday. The sight of this little man in a straw hat was familiar to all the townspeople The sound of his hearty laugh was equally well-known.

The Depression forced Larry Quigley to move his business elsewhere in town and downtown Saranac Lake lost one of its most colorful characters. But not forever.

The opening of "Mr. Quigley’s" restores a bit of the Village's history while adding a new dimension to its future. "Mr. Quigley's" patrons will enjoy a quieter, more mellow atmosphere than is generally found downtown. They will be able to sit comfortably at tables and talk while looking out at the river, or watching sports and movies on the five-foot television screen. With its woodstove stoked full. ''Mr Quigley’s” will be the ideal spot for watching the Olympics during February's freezing weather.

The Grand Opening of this unique drinking emporium will take place Friday, January 11, at 4 p.m., featuring a double-bubble drink special from 5 - 9 p.m.

So come down, bring your friends, and welcome Mr Quigley back to downtown Saranac Lake!

Noise at local bar draws new complaints

By PETER RACETTE

SARANAC LAKE - Several downtown residents complained last night about a local bar to the Saranac Lake Village Board.

Led by Rita Hadjo and Mary Murray, they said that Dr. Y's bar on Broadway has been a continual nuisance and that noise from the establishment disrupts their sleep and infringes on their right of privacy.

They said that the summer-long disturbances at the bar culminated in last Saturday's mud-wrestling contest on the bar's outside deck.

In a letter to the Board, they detailed the bar's recent violations of village ordinances. The list included loud noise, open containers outside the establishment, drinks being served after the 3 a.m. closing time, urination in public and mop buckets being dumped into the Saranac River.

“We wouldn't care about these things if he (Dr. Y's owner Edward Yanchitis) was able to keep it inside his own establishment,” said Hadjo, “but it's obvious he doesn't have control of the place.”

The complainants added that the police do not appear to be able to control the situation.

The board discussed the matter at length with the citizens. Village Mayor Tim Jock said that passing additional ordinances would not ease the problem if existing ordinances were not being enforced.

Jock said he went to Dr. Y's on Saturday night because so many complaints had been received about the noise caused by the mud-wrestling contest. He said that he was not satisfied with the way the police had handled the situation. The board later huddled with village police chief Gilles Miron in an executive session to discuss personnel matters.

The police department did issue three tickets for violations of village ordinances at Dr. Y's on Saturday night. Two patrons were ticketed for open container violations and Yanchitis was ticketed for loud noise.

Yanchitis said this morning that he was “paranoid” about things being exaggerated. He added that complaints about the mud-wrestling were received before the contest even began. Yanchitis felt this indicated that people were more upset about the contest being held than the noise it created.

…The impact of 1,200 rugby players coming to Saranac Lake from all over America and Canada for one weekend hits more than just sports fans. For many area merchants, Saturday and Sunday will make one of the busiest weekends of the year. Ruggers will consume more than 300 cases of beer at Dr. Y's Bar during the weekend, owner Ed Yanchitis said. On an average weekend, Yanchitis sells 75 cases of beer.

Open door policy is back!

…Ann Russell, who now owns the Art Company building on Dorsey Street, complained about noise from Dr. Y's bar on Broadway during rugby weekend.

Mayor Tim Jock said the tournament did area businesses a lot of good, and suggested that people should be more tolerant of noise on a busy weekend.

Russell said that she is losing $500 a month because she has two apartments adjacent to the bar that she cannot rent out because of the noise problems.

Lawless said the noise should not be tolerated just because it was a busy weekend...
