Dr. Ernest Ellsworth Keet, Jr. was a World War II veteran.  He was was instrumental in establishing the coronary care unit at Saranac Lake General Hospital, and was a member of the board of governors of the Saranac Lake Free Library.

Dr. Ernest Keet dies here at 61

SARANAC LAKE - Dr. Ernest E. Keet, Jr., 61, a member of the Medical Associates at 5 Church St. since 1970, died this morning at Saranac Lake General Hospital.

Dr. Keet was born in New York City, a son of Dr. Ernest E. and Henrietta Koerner Keet but his father and grandfather were born in Saranac Lake and he himself always maintained ties here.

His grandfather, a guide and harness maker, had been a Harrietstown justice.

Dr. Keet joined the Medical Associates here after spending 15 summers here. He had been chief of medicine at Jamaica Hospital and had a private practice in Queens. He also served in the World War II Navy in the Philippine Islands from 1941 to 1945 and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

After moving to Saranac Lake at 170 Park Ave. he became a member of the board of governors of the Saranac Lake Free Library and was active in the Ski Club. He also was instrumental in establishing the coronary care unit at Saranac Lake General Hospital.

He was a 1931 graduate of Cornell University. He received his M.D. from the Cornell Medical School in New York City and served his residency at Kings County Hospital. He was a board certified internist, a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and had been active and held office in several other medical organizations.

In October, his paper on rare diseases in the Adirondacks was published in the Journal of Medicine.

Survivors are: his wife, Jane Welton Keet ; two sons, Ernest E. Keet III of Wilton, Conn, and Robert B. Keet of San Francisco; a daughter, Mary Jane Dowling of Hyannis Port, Mass.; two brothers, William K. Keet of Atlanta, Ga. and John Keet of Waterbury, Conn.; a sister, Mary Ellen DelToro of Northport; and five grandchildren.

The Keough and Son Memorial Chapels have charge of arrangements for the Memorial service at 4 p.m., Wednesday at St. Luke's Church. The Rev. Philip W. Snyder, rector, will conduct the service. There will be no calling hours and cremation will take place.
