SARANAC LAKE CHAUFFEUR MURDERED

Levi LeBeau Shot and Killed by Herbert Hazeltine

Levi LeBeau, aged 26 was shot and killed by Herbert Hazeltine at Lower Saranac Lake about midnight Saturday. The shooting was the result of a quarrel between the two men.

It is said that LeBeau, who is chauffeur, went to Hyde Camp, where Hazeltine was a caretaker and asked for whiskey which was refused. When Hazeltine refused to give LeBeau a drink, it appears that a quarrel followed and that when LeBeau left there was considerable feeling between the two men. Later LeBeau returned for his hat which he had left and was twice shot by Hazletine, according to reports both men being under the influence of liquor at the time. Philip Savro, who was at the camp, immediately notified the police at Saranac Lake and Chief Sheldon and Officer Jones went to the scene of the shooting and placed Hazeltine under arrest.

He was taken to the county jail at Malone. Hazeltine is a guide well known in the Adirondacks and is 67 years old.
