Father Rogers Sings Mass Here Tomorrow

Seldom in Saranac Lake is it possible for Roman Catholics to participate in Holy Mass celebrated by one of their life-long neighbors.

But that will happen tomorrow morning in St. Bernard's Church at 8 o'clock when Rev. Thomas W. Rogers, of 26 [sic] McClelland street will be celebrant.

Father Rogers is the twin brother of Patrolman Neil Rogers of the Saranac Lake Police Department, although no one-would guess the fact! There must be a foot and fifty pounds difference in their height and weight. You may guess who is the larger.

Saranac Lake's newest priest is spending several weeks here and in this area following his ordination to the Priesthood last Saturday. He is the son of Mrs. Ethel H. Rogers, of 29 McClelland street. Father Rogers celebrated his first mass at 11 a. m., Sunday in St. Bernard's.

At that time he imparted the Papal blessing to more than 2000 persons who attended the Mass or made a special pilgrimage to the church. The blessing was a privilege extended to Father Rogers by the Pope in Rome during a private audience granted the priest last year during a visit to the Holy City and the Vatican.

Father Rogers was ordained as the first priest to be so honored by the Community of the Sons of Mary, Health of the Sick, at Covington, Ky. The impressive ceremonies were held in St Mary's Cathedral in that city. The Most Reverend William T. Mulloy, D.D., was the ordaining prelate. The Chaplain of the ordination was the Very Rev. Edward F. Geresehe, S.J., founder of the Community.

Father Rogers was born in Saranac Lake on January 15. 1923. He attended St. Bernard's School and was graduated Saranac Lake High School with the Class of 1941. He enrolled in Montfort College for two years and then attended Niagara University, from which he was graduated. Later he attended the seminary department of the University. After a year's teaching in the public schools at Dannemora, he entered St. Francis Seminary at Loretto, Pa…
