Walter Stahl was a World War II veteran.  He worked at Swift and Company for thirty-two years before retiring in 1974.

SARANAC LAKE - Walter J. Stahl Sr., 83, of 1 State Street, Saranac Lake, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Born Nov. 22, 1915 in New York City, he was the son of Walter Arthur and Johanna Stahl.

Mr. Stahl was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army. He had been employed by Swift & Co. in Saranac Lake for 32 years, retiring in 1974. He had also been a bartender at the St. Regis Hotel, Schroeter's  Restaurant and the Ampersand Bay Boat Club in Saranac Lake.

He was a member and former president of the Saranac Lake Speedskating Assoc., and the Saranac Lake Bobsled Club. He was also a member of the Adirondack and United States Bobsled Clubs and was a member of the 1980 Winter Olympic support staff.

He was also a member and Commodore of the Saranac Lake Boat and Waterways Club, a life member of the Elks Lodge 1508, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and an active member of the Saranac Lake Adult Center.

He had been active in fundraising for the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad and years ago he enjoyed taking area children camping and boating.

Survivors include: a son, Walter J. Stahl, Jr. of Napa, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Stephanie Toso, Kimberly Gibber, Shalan Gayler, Kevin Stahl, and Sarah Mohajery.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Emily Lease in 1973, and by his companion, Mary Mclntyre in 1991.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Dec. 28 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. An Elks service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday followed by a veterans service at 8:15 The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad, the Hemochromatosis foundation, Inc., or the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.
