Heavy trucks use Mt. Hermon Road to get to and from the quarry. The sign in intended for them.
Jake Breaks are another name for the "Jacobs Engine Brake" which is made by Jacobs Vehicle Systems. It is used on diesel trucks. These are compression release engine brakes that take away power from the engine. Since it uses compressed air, there is noise involved. It is because of the noise that you see "No Jake Breaks" signs near towns and neighborhoods.
Aside from the misuse of the trademark, the company that makes Jacobs Engine Brakes claims that the noise of the breaks is not a major problem as long as the exhaust system is good and has not been altered.
There was a "No Jake Breaks" sign in Salinas that was removed after 20 years in use.
