c.c. Concerned Taxpayers, Psychiatrists and caring parents and students.

Started in 1990 for Safety for women. Men, couples, groups, clubs, tourists have always been welcome to support our efforts.

Walks take place between 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

The meeting spot is most often a TTC Subway Station main entrance/exit.

Once people leave the subway station together, at their first stop in the park or green space, everyone forms a circle and introduces themselves to each other.

Then people walk. A break is scheduled halfway in the afternoon where people can freshen up and chat for a while before continuing.

Sometimes, smaller groups of people go for dinner afterwards, but that's an informal thing.

Background

In 1987, Christa Kroboth was taking a break from cycling in HIGH PARK and she was attacked.

"There was a guy hiding behind the partition at the washrooms and he just grabbed me, I choked him and he let go so I was able to get away, but when I rode home, I just started shaking uncontrollably."

That vicious attack in a rest room in the popular park was the catalyst for Christa to start a walking group, guiding others through various green spaces in the city. Initially it was only women who walked together.

"Even though I started it for health and safety in numbers, it became a singles thing. I just thought single women would come, but then men started to come along too. Both men and women walking through nature trails can feel unsafe."

And whenever men and women between 30 and 50 meet-up, hook-ups are inevitable...

"We hear about one or two marriages every single year from people who met just gathering together to casually go
for a walk, I've had people call me up who met on one of our walks to tell me they have kids now."

The walks are usually 10 kilometres long, with the option of stopping after five kilometres. There are also numerous stops along the way...

"We have what I call an information minute where we'll discuss the history of the park or discuss a particular plant or tree."
