The City of York in its most recent popular reference, was a land-locked former municipality which was bordered by North York, Etobicoke and the Old City of Toronto.

It was amalgamated into the Megacity of Toronto in 1998.

Going deeper into Toronto's History, and a bit of confusion may pop up.

Toronto, founded in 1793 by the French, was renamed York by the British, then renamed back to Toronto, to avoid confusion with New York City which was renamed from New Amsterdam.

Of all the former municipalities which were absorbed into the Amalgamated Megacity, this one seems to have lost its own identity the quickest.
