Martha Day was the only daughter of Goldie and Albert Breier. She married Major Day, and they had three children. She worked with her husband, and also founded her own real estate firm, specializing in waterfront properties. She was involved in many civic and business groups, including the Girl Scouts, the Franklin County Board of Realtors, and United Community Church. She was the 484th member of the 46ers.

Death Oct. 24th ends active career of Martha Day, 71

Mrs. Martha Day, 71, died at her home on Upper Saranac Lake at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 24. She had been in failing health for some time.

There will be no calling hours, and interment will be private. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service which will be held Friday, October 27, at 3 p.m. at the United Community Church here. A reception will follow the service.

She was born at Saranac Lake on August 29, 1918, the only child of Albert and Goldie Breier, and was graduated from Saranac Lake High School and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston.

On September 30, 1939 she was married at Saranac Lake to Major Day Sr. They resided in Albany and Glens Falls before coming to Tupper Lake in 1951.

Throughout their years here Mrs. Day was active in business and civic affairs, and worked for many years in Major Day Wholesale, now Day Wholesale, Inc. In 1974 she founded the real estate business of Martha B. Day, Realtor, specializing in waterfront property. She was an active member of the Franklin County Board of Realtors and in Girl Scout work here, serving as a scout leader and later a member and president of the North Country Girl Scout Council.

Throughout her life she participated in church work, teaching Sunday School and relief time religious education. Mrs. Day served both as a deacon and as an elder in the United Community Church here. She was a past chairperson of the Island Chapel on Upper Saranac Lake and served several terms on its board.

She was secretary of the Upper Saranac Lake Association until shortly before her death , and was active for many years in Tupper Lake Chapter, American Red Cross. Other organizations to which she gave her time included the Boy Scouts, the annul Tupper Lake Christmas Fund, and area chambers of commerce.

In 1968 she and her son, Peter, became members of the Adirondack 46rs. She was the 484th member to climb all 46 Adirondack peaks topping 4,000 feet in elevation.

Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Major Day Jr. of Upper Saranac Lake and Peter Scott Day, Tupper Lake; a daughter, Barbara  Day of Austin, Texas ; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The family requests no flowers. Friends who wish to make memorial donations are asked to consider the High Peaks Hospice, Box 131, Saranac Lake. Funeral arrangements were with the Richer Funeral Home.
