Toronto is a city that has grown via numerous annexations and Amalgamations into its present boundaries today.

The most recent Amalgamation was known as the MegaCity.

It occured on January 1, 1998 when the former five cities of Etobicoke, North York, Old City of Toronto, City of York, Scarborough and the borough of East York were amalgamated into the present City of Toronto.

There were non-binding referendums during the previous Election Year before Amalgamation took place, with a majority who voted opposed to the idea.

The Province of Ontario forced Amalgamation anyway.

In a nostalgic way, it's often used as a scapegoat for complaining about City Services or lack thereof nowadays due to budget concerns.
