Highway 16 is a state highway that runs through Woodland. It overlaps with County Road 22 west of town. At County Road 98, where County Road 22 becomes Main Street, Highway 16 turns north and overlaps with County Road 98 until reaching I-5 just north of Woodland. Highway 16 then overlaps with I-5 as it passes through Woodland.

Northwest of Woodland, Highway 16 runs roughly parallel to Cache Creek, passing through MadisonEsparto,Capay,BrooksTancred,Guinda, andRumsey, It also passes through the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. From Rumsey to the border of Yolo and Colusa Counties, it runs alongside or very close to Cache Creek. This section has gates at each end due to being highly prone to rockslides. In Colusa County, Highway 16 runs alongside Bear Creek and ends in a junction withHighway 20 near Wilbur Springs.

Southeast of Woodland, Highway 16 overlaps with the I-5 and Highway 50 freeways through most of the Sacramento area before separating from Highway 50 at the Howe Avenue/Power Inn Road exit near Rancho Cordova. It continues southeast through Rancho Murieta until it ends in a junction with Highway 49 just outside Plymouth in Amador County,

Major Intersections

In Woodland, Highway 16 intersects with East Kentucky Avenue, East Beamer StreetHighway 113, Pioneer Avenue, East Main Street, and County Road 102.

Street Trees

The portion of Highway 16 that runs along the west edge of Woodland has many street trees planted by the city along the east side of it (the side that is inside the city limits). These trees include the invasive weed species Flowering Pear/Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana) but also two tree species that are native to Woodland: California Black Walnut (Juglans hindsii) and Valley Oak (Quercus lobata). Other non-native trees planted along this segment of Highway 16 include Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora), and Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis).
